The tracker "http://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce" is called an "open public tracker", which means that anyone can use it without registering with it. Anyone, therefore, can create a *.torrent file (for example, in utorrent) and add this tracker to the list in the torrent. Then, it can be uploaded either to a public site (mininova, etc) or even a private BitTorrent site, and shared.
The ‘denis‘ tracker is popular - The Pirate Bay has a few of its own "open public trackers" as well, but you don‘t see anyone bad-mouthing them. Even mininova has at least one tracker available to the public, as well. Thus, like anything else available publicly on the Internet - it is susceptible to corruption by unwanted individuals. Including the RIAA, and it‘s goonies (MediaDefender, MediaSentry etc.) also can use public trackers to spread malicious torrents suited for "tracking" the individuals involved in the torrents. The bottom line is this: Use a Private BitTorrent website. Period. Many private sites don‘t allow for ‘member-uploading‘ (at least not right away) and thus all torrents are usually *working* without the tampering associated with public inputs. |
