works great(on XP) thnx! unpack(several times, till you see the install file) - run install normally - mount first disk - have registry file for FF8 point to mounted disc(look online for fix), worked for me(may have to reinstall though). |

people who are saying that it is asking for discs, you have to use a program like poweriso to mount the disks. and then it will work |

OK, so after downloading you need to unzip the pack. Then, unpack each individual disc to a seperate folder. You have to unpack the file that say‘s Final Fantasy VIII Install CD, after unpacking you‘ll have two FF8-install files and two apps, one is FF8B and the other is FF8CR. Mount the either of the FF8-install files to a Virtual Drive, I use PowerISO for this, and run the install program. After it has finished go back to the FF8CR file and run it, this creates the patch you will need and it will be called FF8B. Copy this file to the FF8 program folder, delete the original FF8 file there and rename the FF8B file to FF8. Next, run regedit. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SOFTWARE, SQUARE SOFT INC, FINAL FANTASY VIII, THEN 1.00. On the right side you‘ll see DataDrive and under data it will show your default CD-ROM drive. Right click DataDrive and click modify. Under "Value Data" change it to whatever the drive letter of your Virtual Drive is. Basically all that is changing where the FF8 program will look for the individual game CD‘s. All you have to do after that is mount the appropriate game Disc to your virtual drive and launch the game. Later. |

On another note, I‘m playing the game on my laptop that has an AMD Turion 64x2 which is a dual-core processor. After I started playing the game I noticed that the game play was sluggish but the cut-scenes were playing fine. A bit in the game crashed. After playing a few more times with the same issue I decided to do a little research. The game was developed to run on a single core processor and it seemed the software was having an issue with be processed on two different levels. To fix this I downloaded CPU Control which is a program that allows you to select which processor will handle which process. I downloaded it for free from here:
http://www.koma-code.de/index.php?option=com_contenttask=viewid=88Itemi d=93 Unzip and install. Start the program and then start the game, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the Task Manager and minimizes the game. In CPU Control right click FF8.exe under the Process List and click CPU1, CPU2, etc. depending on how many cores you have and this will keep the FF8.exe running on a single core. If this doesn‘t work on the right side of CPU Control select CPU1 to put all current running processes to Core 1 and put FF8.exe to CPU2, CPU3, etc. so that it is being ran on a processor by itself. (I wouldn‘t recommend using this second method while running more than just the game to keep from over-usage on a single core of your processor). So far I haven‘t had any issues with gameplay outside of when I leave the game running for more than 8 hours (I‘ve left it on while doing other things around the house) in which case the game may crash, but this has only happened twice. Will put another post if I find the source of this. Hope these past two posts have helped everyone. |

Good call FlameHead692006, although no special software is needed to address this. I downloaded a different torrent for this game, and was about to download this one thinking mine may have been corrupt after the troubleshooting I‘ve done.
I‘m running an Athlon 64x2 and have been experiencing crash after crash on this game. Using the taskmanager after I launch FF8.exe I right clicked over the process, chose "Set Affinity" and set it to run in a single core instead of both and it has been running like a dream since (coupled with the nVidia patch of course). First I set it to run on CPU 1 but my keyboard and game controller wouldn‘t respond, so I restarted the game, and set it to run on CPU 0 and everything works now. If any of you are having issues with this game crashing and are using a dual core processor, be sure to pass this info along. |

FlameHead692006,
When I go to do rh FF8CR.run program is it normal for it to create a 750MB+ patch or is something going wrong here? I would just like to be on the safe side if FlameHead692006 doesn‘t answer please anybody help I don‘t wanna have a super virus on my computer that will destroy it later in the future. (I highly doubt that would happen but just to be safe.) |

Robert, these files are safe and you have nothing to worry about.
If you‘re using an nVidia graphics card (GeForce etc) follow this link for the appropriate patch. http://www.eidosinteractive.co.uk/support/patchinfo.html?ptid=38 If you‘re using a different graphics cards, go here: http://www.eidosinteractive.co.uk/support/patchinfo.html?ptid=37 Be sure to follow the instructions. |
