It has now become an epidemic Either the original Ripper Or the subsequent uploader Or the copycat uploader is Cropping the sides of the movies to allow the remaining picture to fit a 16 by 9 flat screen High Def TV without the black bars at the top and bottom In order to get rid of the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, the left And right sides of the picture are discarded, leaving only the center portion. Depending on the original film format we are loosing from 26% up to 38% of the movie we expected to see IT JUST DONT LOOK RIGHT!!!!! This is a plea to those responsible PLEASE LABLE YOUR FILE properly If a an original 2.35:1 movie format (21x9) is butchered to fit a 1.78:1 screen (16x9) Please label it accordingly so we can choose the full movie version if we prefer. Your hard work and effort are appreciated just label the file properly Thank you |

I‘m seeing the same thing as Xander13, But it seems the cropping is done at the Bottom. It‘s been bugging me. to see what I‘m talking about, download "The House Bunny R5 XVID - STG" (which I‘m keeping even-tho it‘s cropped on the sides and has more image to the top bottom) and compair it to the "Klaxxon" one or the aXXo made also. Do it, and play them side by side and you see the differance. I want the full widescreen but, it seems to be cropped on the bottom alot. They don‘t crop them when the make it a WS-DVD do they?? I don‘t like all this chopping, if it‘s the studio or the Ripper of the movie. I‘d like to see the full uncut, untrimmed, uncropped movie. Yes these are free, but if we do it right, we can put this in the past, set a standard to ripping to were evrybody is happy. Or at least has an understanding on the true DVD screen aspect-ratios without cropping done.

The easiest way is to go to the following web site http://www.imdb.com And search for the movie by name, then scroll down past the Cast List where you will find Parents Guide Runtime Country Language Color Aspect Ratio Sound Mix And other details about the movie For our purpose make note of the Aspect Ratio Aspect Ratio is a measurement of the comparative display dimensions of any particular movie So the first part of the ratio is a width measurement compared to the height which is shown in the second part of the ratio (which is always 1) Aspect Ratio: 1.85 : 1 means the movie as it appeared in theaters or on DVD is 1.85 times as wide as it is high (think 18.5 wide by 10 high) Aspect Ratio: 2.35 : 1 means the movie as it appeared in theaters or on DVD is 2.35 times as wide as it is high (think 23.5 wide by 10 high) And so on But for High Def TV Movies or Programs the Aspect Ratio is 1.78 : 1 because they are meant to fill an 16 x 9 HDTV screen (not your 16 x 10 computer monitor) (think 16 wide by 9 high) from side to side and top to bottom with NO black bars at the top or bottom or sides SO Any movie prepared with a 1.78 : 1 or a 1.85 : 1 Aspect Ratio will fill (or nearly fill) your 16 by 10 wide screen computer monitor side to side and Top to bottom. Which is No Problem But the only way you can make a 2.35 ; 1 (23.5 by 10) movie fill top to bottom is to cut 7.5 inches from the width (32%) And worse if the original Aspect Ratio was 2.76 : 1 then 11.6 (42%) has to be cut From the width to make whats left of the picture fill the screen top to bottom. And so on (dont make me do the math for 2.15 : 1 and all the OTHER ratios So my beef is finding out AFTER the download that I only got 58% of the movie, and I have to search for the full movie by a different uploader. Its an honest beef and a fair suggestion. My mistake was in assuming everyone understood Aspect Ratio And yes I know that aXX0 uploads are not cropped but aXXo is not the Only Uploader and you ALL know that not all files with the aXXo label are REAL aXXo files AND as you can see by other posts Im not the only one if given a choice would Prefer to download a 100% full width movie instead of just the 58% width Of a Cropped movie All I want for you and for me is the option to choose the format we prefer through proper labelling. Xander 13 question for you. In most movies isn‘t the super35 method used to create wide screen images? The lens does not alter the shape of the image that the camera collects. The image taken then has an aspect ratio of approximately 1.65:1, which ultimately gets matted to an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. So When transferring the movie to home video for a PS version, the Super 35 image is used, since the additional footage caught on film allows the filmmakers to fill up the entire space of a TV, without resorting to cropping. |

To muscleboundfool 1 day ago answer for you You might have the muscle but you are no fool. You are pretty close. Because Im no expert I and I need to be brief I will speak only about my understanding of theatrical movies released with a 2.35 : 1 Aspect Ratio. First - both the 35mm and Super 35mm film negative used in the 35mm camera are exactly the same size. Super 35mm film uses the full width between the sprockets to capture the more picture but allows for no room to encode 8 to 12 channels of sound. So if you want sound, then you use the same 35mm film negative but shoot it through a narrower aperture leaving room on the negative to encode the finished sound track (back at the studio lab) to produce the prints used in the theaters. Next - there are 2 ways to make a 2.35 : 1 print. The expensive way (think Batman and Star Wars) is to use an Anamorphic camera lens that sees in horizontal rectangles and optically changes those rectangles to squares to imprint the negative in order to fit the standard 1.33 : 1 Aspect Ratio that the world wide industry standard 35mm film negative is manufactured in (think older 4x3 monitors and TV screens.). If you held the develop film itself up to the light the actors would all appear very tall and skinny but when you display this 1.33 : 1 Aspect Ratio film print using a projector with an Anamorphic lens, the squares on the film print are optically changed back to the horizontal rectangles the camera saw and projects a 2.35 : 1 Aspect Ratio picture onto the screen (the actors are no longer tall and skinny) The cheaper way is to just use the same 35mm film negative in a camera with a Non Anamorphic lens. The lens sees squares and passes the unaltered image to the 1.33 : 1 Aspect Ratio film negative. If you held that developed film up to the light the actors would look normal and back at the studio lab the top and bottom of the image are matted (cropped/ removed from view) to produce an Aspect Ratio of 2.35 : 1 when projected through a Non Anamorphic lens at the theater (it can be done at the theater itself - another story). The point is, that regardless of the image transferred to the film by the lens, the Directors vision of his finished product included only that which would fit within the 2.35 : 1 Aspect Ratio he imagines. So, back at the studio lab, the top an bottom if the 1.33 : 1 Aspect Ratio image on the film negative are removed from our viewing pleasure (along with the microphone and boom at the top an the guy holding the cue cards or the wind machine at the bottom) because that part of the image was not needed or wanted in the Frame to tell his story. Even if there were no microphone or cue cards visible, they dont just add the missing parts of the image back in to the DVD version because this would result in to much foreground and to much sky and it just wouldnt look right and the Director would flip out and sue the studio. The DVD movies you rent or buy that have NO black bars on the top or bottom have been envisioned by the Director for presentation in a theater using a 1.85 : 1 Aspect Ratio AND have been digitally scrunched horizontally and stretched at the top and bottom slightly to produce a 1.78 : 1 aspect ratio that conforms to the 16x9 HD widescreen image used for new TVs. And even that small alteration now requires a warning or disclaimer on the DVD jacket (in North America) that that informs you that the image presented on that DVD has been enhanced for 16x9 viewing, or words to that effect. Look for it. If the movie was envisioned by the director as a 2.35 : 1 Aspect Ratio finished movie, then a legal DVD version WILL have the Black bars at the top and bottom of your wide screen HDTV or monitor to maintain the visual integrity of the Directors artistic vision. They just dont allow the studios to fuck with their art. Thats the best I can do AND keep it short. |

Xander thanks for the clarification. Of course using sup35 ps will distort the theater image but I like to know that it is not cropped to get some of the directors image. But the black bars don‘t always mean you get the full directors image. Referring to your cheaper method some use soft matte which the black bars will actually distort the image more then PS due to the bars being added after the film was made.
One more question for you, as I do not mind the blank bars for some movies. BUT WHY DO SOME MOVIES WITH BLACK BARS TAKE UP 50% OF THE SCREEN WHILE SOME ARE BARELY NOTICEABLE. That might be why some rippers remove the bars. Does it have to do with the movie being in 1.85 or 2.35? Because a 10% loss of screen no biggie for the directors image but when the bars are bigger then the screen, it ruins my viewing experience. |

No I do live in the USA and I have a 50 inch wide screen but I notice some movies have significantly less black bar length. Could that be the difference between the letterbox 1.85 and 2.35? If so for dvd purposes most movies should just make a 1.85 format or make a super bulb that lasts as long as a tv for projectors. |

First of all - I like your super bulb idea But speaking ONLY about the picture that appears on your 16x9 ratio 50 inch HDTV, using a legal retail DVD movie you rent or buy. Increasingly, most Studios are using a digital Anamorphic method of transferring a 1.85 : 1 theater print to a DVD that produces NO black bars on the top or bottom by slightly squeezing the horizontal width and stretching the height resulting in a 1;78 : 1 picture that is technically distorted, but for the most part, that distortion is visually unnoticeable. These Anamorphic DVDs are a labelled as such and now also carry a further notification *Enhanced for 16x9 Viewing* HOWEVER If the Studio chooses NOT to use the digital Anamorphic process to transfer the 1.85 : 1 theater print to the DVD, then the picture displayed on your 16x9 - 50 inch TV will remain in the 1.85 : 1 Aspect Ratio and there WILL be skinny black bars at the top and button, but you will have the satisfaction of knowing you are watching a truly proportioned non-distorted movie. The Digital Anamorphic Process used to change a 1.85 : 1 THEATER movie into a 1.78 :1 (16x9) DVD movie is just computer programming and takes little more than a mouse click and as such is no more expensive to produce than a the Non-Anamorphic DVD with the skinny black bars. Eventually and relative quickly, all Studio will use the Anamorphic process on their 1;85 : 1 theater movie prints to produce 1.78 : 1 DVD movies and those skinny black bars will be gone. Its what the majority of their customers prefer. BUT For all those people who are viewing either one of those DVDs on a older 4x3 monitor or TV (I have a 10 year old 4x3 - 50 inch Sony under dust in my garage) will be stuck with a larger set of black bars and of course if they are viewing a 2:35 : 1 movie, Then up to half the viewing screen will remain black. We are in a transition period from analogue to digital and from 4x3 Standard Def. to 16x9 High Def. NON OF THE ABOVE Applies uniformly to any of the movie files available on the Net other than a place to start. Its the Ripper (his program) who chooses the Aspect Ratio AND the resolution that will produce a 700MB file for a CD burn and sometime it works out really close. The Director for the movie *Death Race* used 35mm Kodak negative to shoot in Super 35 format then produced a 35mm Anamorphic Print with an aspect ratio o 2.35 : 1 for theater release, then transferred it to a 4.5GB DVD in the same 2.35 : 1 Aspect Ratio for sale or rental. Then the Ripper who supplies aXXo, took that DVD and ripped and reformatted th movie to a resolution of 644x272 (not including the black bars) with an Aspect Ratio of 2.36 : 1 to make a 701MB movie file for download by us (which is pretty damn good) NOTE: The DVD includes the black bars in the picture encoding Because ALL DVDs have a hardcoded resolution of 720x480 regardless of the Aspect Ratio of the actual movie. The Ripper can crop off the black bars that are included in the DVD and maybe a little of the picture as well if needed to hit the target of 700MB and so the black bars dont take up space in the ripped file The Director for the movie *The Day The Earth Stood Still* used 35mm Kodak negative to shoot in Super 35 format then produced a 35mm Anamorphic Print with an aspect ratio o 2.35 : 1 for theater release, (as well as a 70mm horizontal blow up for IMAX) then transferred it to a 4.5GB DVD with a resolution of 720x480 (including the black bars) in the same 2.35 : 1 Aspect Ratio for sale or rental. Then the Ripper who supplies aXXo, took that DVD and ripped and reformatted it to a resolution of 676x272 (without the black bars) with an Aspect Ratio of 2.48 : 1 to make a 701MB movie file for download by us (which is still pretty damn good but missing a small portion of the height) A small (or not-so-small) crop in the height can increase the Quality of the remaining part of the picture with out changing the perspective (shape) of the actors or objects, but the Aspect Ratio of the movie will be changed and the black bars required could be larger but the resulting file will meet the required size of 700MB But of course aXXo uses quality rips handled by the XviD Program which chooses the output resolution and Aspect Ratio that will produce the best Quality shrink for the required file size (target 700MB) just the same as we do at home (I use DivX, but the outcome is the same) But as you have begun to notice, this to is in transition. Longer movies with more action sequences are being made available in a larger file size or split into 2 - 700MB files (for those who havent switched from 700MB CD blanks to 4.5GB DVD blanks to burn their collection to). DVD blanks have dropped drastically in price and more and more people have HDTV which demands larger files to maintain the Quality not noticeable on older standard Def, TVs. P |

Plus new video Shrinking processes can reduce an HD BluRay movie to a 4.5GB file which, although is still considered a large download, fits perfectly on a standard blank DVD and is becoming increasingly popular.

I think xander13 may have a point - it‘s a better experience in proper widescreen because our eyes see more horizontally than they do vertically - a rectangular movie is better than a square movie. What strikes me is that in VLC Media Player you can change the aspect ratio simply by pressing ‘A‘ repeatedly.
So if someone is chopping up our films just so they can have an aspect ratio that is convenient to them when they could instead just press the ‘a‘ key, when that would make them a big dumbass who I would punch in the face if I "seen or knew him" |

Finished downloading movie. Watched and I must say that it wasn‘t as great and funny as I thought. It was a VERY BORING movie. (That‘s my opinion; thanks). sorry but very mundane comedy; too much of that LAIRE stuff in the film; that is the boy that‘s into DragonFairies. When you see the movie you will know what I mean. And on that note WHAT A STUPID ENDING.
